Bernard Works
“Transforming façade engineering into a tool for integration rather than compromise.”
01
THE CHALLENGE
Bernard Works required far more than the coordination of isolated façade components. The project demanded a fully integrated approach capable of merging architectural ambition, structural logic and building performance into a coherent system. From the earliest stages, the challenge was to balance the industrial identity of the exposed brick façade with the demanding thermal, construction and coordination requirements of a contemporary mixed-use development in London. Several hidden technical risks emerged during the detailed façade review process, particularly around terrace interfaces, thermal continuity and façade buildability.
02
THE SOLUTION
Frame Projects acted as a technical coordinator between architecture, structure and façade performance, supporting the project from the preliminary design stages. Multiple façade strategies were evaluated, including traditional masonry and brickslip solutions, comparing cost implications, thermal behaviour, installation impact and long-term performance. By coordinating all stakeholders and reviewing executive details in advance, the engineering process transformed potential construction risks into coordinated and buildable façade solutions capable of preserving the original architectural intent.
03
Thermal performance as a design driver. When façade choices influence far more than aesthetics.
Detailed analysis revealed that traditional masonry systems provided significantly better thermal performance than expected compared to brickslip alternatives, while also improving overall project value and construction consistency. The engineering process demonstrated how façade decisions influence not only aesthetics, but also thermal continuity, installation strategy, maintenance and overall project feasibility within a dense urban context where tolerances and interfaces become critical.
04
Integrated coordination beyond façade engineering.
The engineering strategy focused on integrating architectural intent, thermal continuity, buildability and structural coordination into a unified façade system. Rather than treating the envelope as a collection of isolated components, the project was approached as an interconnected technical system where architecture, structure and performance had to coexist seamlessly from the earliest design stages.

CONCLUSIONS
Bernard Works demonstrates how early-stage engineering can protect architectural ambition while reducing technical risk through integrated coordination and performance-driven analysis. The project highlights the value of façade consultancy as a strategic design tool capable of improving buildability, reducing uncertainty and supporting informed technical decision-making throughout the development process.
